Out of the Ashes

This captivating piece was inspired by the devastating tragedy that was 9/11. The scenes and imagery were burned into Bryant’s mind as she went to her studio with hopes to relinquish control of some of these horrific details on the one year anniversary.

Bryant decided to reflect upon the light and dark of the event, and in so chose the medium of Ink and Gouache to portray her vision.  She constructed the grill of the building, produced the firefighters rushing in and then to create the chaos and ash; she painted white Gouache for light then doused the entire water color board in black ink.

It was when she washed away the darkness of that ink that the true miracle appeared. Crosses emerged from the ruble. People reached out for a savior. A demon standing on top of what remained of the building, gazed upon his destructive creation.  Hidden aspects that she did not consciously draw but felt their presence, surfaced, including the faces of the lost.  When Bryant allowed the light of the world back into her heart, the aftermath became something she could live with.

Bryant’s artwork tends to reveal “a picture, within a picture, within a picture.”  She has a way of allowing things to just happen. In this painting, Bryant took life “Out of the Ashes”.

As the soot and dirt and ash rained down,
We became one color.
As we carried each other down the stairs of the burning building
We became one class.
As we lit candles of waiting and hope
We became one generation.
As the firefighters and police officers fought their way into the inferno
We became one gender.
As we fell to our knees in prayer for strength,
We became one faith.
As we whispered or shouted words of encouragement,
We spoke one language.
As we gave our blood in lines a mile long,
We became one body.
As we mourned together the great loss
We became one family.
As we cried tears of grief and loss
We became one soul.
As we retell with pride of the sacrifice of heroes
We become one people.
We are
One color
One class
One generation
One gender
One faith
One language
One body
One family
One soul
One people
We are The Power of One.
We are United.
We are America.
